Many times, given the amount of spam my inbox has somehow magically subscribed itself to over the years, I constantly find myself using the iPhone app to delete these messages…..and that’s where the problem is. I find that this isn’t actually deleting the messages and is in-fact just simply archiving them.
To find a solution for this issue, one must first understand what GMail does when it ‘archives’ something. All it is doing is removing all the ‘labels’. By default all incoming mail will be marked with the ‘inbox’ label. Thus placing the item into your inbox folder. This is great, but not when you’ve got a buttload of spam coming in and are frequently archiving mail. So, in order to find all your archived mail, all you need to do is this:
From within GMail, go to the search function and type the following:
has:nouserlabels -in:sent -in:chat -in:draft -in:inbox
